DOUBLE EXTRA CREDIT POINTS RESPONSE QUESTIONS -

In chapter 2, Lily comments on a song by The Supremes, "Where Did Our Love Go?" She states, "There's nothing like a song about lost love to remind you how everything precious can slip from the hinges where you've hung it so careful" (pg. 50). Read the lyrics below then tell me what other song (current or classic, or from any genre) that resonates with you on some level or reminds you of one of life's ironies.

Baby, baby
Baby don't leave me
Ooh, please don't leave me
All by myself

I've got this yearning, burning
Yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad

You came into my heart
So tenderly
With a burning love
That stings like a bee

Now that I surrender
So helplessly
You now wanna leave
Ooh, you wanna leave me

Ooh, baby, baby
Where did our love go?
Ooh, don't you want me
Don't you want me no more

Ooh, baby
Baby, baby
Where did our love go
And all your promises
Of a love forever more

I've got this yearning, burning
Yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad

Before you won my heart
You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
You wanna leave me behind
Baby, baby, ooh baby

Baby, baby don't leave me
Ooh, please don't leave me
All by myself

Ooh, baby, baby
Where did our love go?

A song's message that I find powerful is "Superman; It's Not Easy" by Five for Fighting.

The lyrics are special to me because it's from Superman's (or a hero's) point of view and reflects
on the difficulty of the responsibility of taking care of everyone. Not that I am Superman or anything (though my friends call me Superwoman), it's not easy doing the things I do. Sometimes I fake a smile so just so someone else can feel better...when I really feel like crying. Sometimes I do so much for people that it raises their expectation...so much so they forget I am just me (to quote the song, I'm only a man in a funny red sheet looking for special things inside of me) and maybe I need saving once in awhile. Don't get me wrong, I could say no, but it's not that easy. Even still, I would not change a thing about my life. It's not easy, but I know each experience is to cultivate my character. More importantly, I am committed to being the best me I can.

Well, I love you guys. Below is a poem I wrote that reflects that same song. I hope you like it.

HAPPY GIRL

As I walk by, I hear people say, “There goes that happy girl.”

They watch and wonder why I am that way.

“It’s because she’s pretty,” they say.

What they don’t know is there are things about myself I find unsightly-

The size of my thighs, the veins on my hands, and my nose that crooks slightly.

But that’s all right, what can I do or say?

The smile on my face draws attention from those things anyway.

“Oh, there goes that happy girl again…she has a marriage that’s strong.”

My husband and I have our valleys. Again, they are wrong!

We work on it and choose to forgive, though we may be miffed.

After all, marriage is a gift.
I choose to be happy though things may go wrong.

Besides, my smile shows I love him and that my anger doesn’t last long.

“Happy girl coming through,” they all whisper as I go by.

“Her kids are so healthy…that’s why she’s so spry.”

If they only knew what I have been through with my son…

It would make anyone cry…and I have…I’ve come undone.

The anguish from the doctor’s dismal news, which I didn’t want to hear,

Never lasted long because my son was healed by my smile, not my tears.

“Ugh, she’s happy because nothing terrible has happened to her…

Life is good; she doesn’t know what it means to suffer.”

If they only knew that even this happy girl has had her share of cancer scares.

What about the scarred up stomach, the strained heart and the knee that was repaired?

Even still, I take my lumps and smile, though it’s greatly pained me.

After all, I am alive and kicking; life’s no guarantee!

People say, “That happy girl - she must be faking it - surely no one can be that content.”

Well, I am…because every moment, good or bad, is heaven sent.
My “happy-girl” attitude is a choice because even when life sucks, life is STILL great.

I choose to weather the storm because I know a glorious rainbow awaits.

And as this happy girl stops to talk to you or just glances at you while she’s smiling,

It is not because she is trying to fool you or wants to hide anything.

It’s because I have a life promise to which I am eternally bound –

To make people a little happier from when they were first found.

I was talking to my cousin about music recently and she told me about a song called Ironic by Alanis Morissette.

This has got to be one of the most powerful messages sent by a song. It shows how extremely ironic life can be. We need to learn to appreciate life's little things a bit more. One day you can be here and alive, and the next day you have no idea where you will be. Every single moment in life, good or bad has to be appreciated, because things happen for a reason. When you think life has gone all wrong, it will find a way to help you make it right again. Just the first verse shows how ironic life is, I mean the old man turns 98, wins the lottery and the next day he dies. Just when things had gotten good for him, his time came. So you really never know what life has in store for you, it is really full of surprises. For example, on one of my most awaited days, my fifteens, a couple of things went wrong, my makeup wasn't exactly what I had wanted, and they gave me the wrong colored flowers for my tables. That might not be a big deal to some people, but well it was a very anticipated day and I never thought anything would go wrong. You really never know what is waiting for you, so just take life one step at a time.

Here are the lyrics:

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic...don't you think
A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

I remember this song well. As a matter of fact, in the mid to late 90's, some students and I had this running joke. Anytime we would tell a story, we would finish with, "Isn't it ironic?" Then we would try to come up with all of these crazy scenarios that were, indeed, ironic.

Alanis is pretty cool. She hasn't done a whole lot lately, but she definitely was popular back then.

Well, thanks :o) As always, stellar job!

CHAPTER 3 EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION:

In chapter 3, Lily looks for guidance as she passes the crop duster since she is unsure what to do or where to go next. Like Lily, do you ever look for signs or seek guidance when you do not know what to do? Explain.

Kaitlynn G. said...

Well, everyone needs guidance from how to do a certain job to how to eat properly. When your growing up, your mom or dad guides you or tries to guide you to do the good and right things in life. So without it, you wouldn't know right from wrong and you would be in jail.

Anonymous said...

When I am lost, I usually find myself looking for some sort of guidance. I even look for signs from up above like Lily did with the crop duster. But when that doesn't work, I just go and seek for guidance. Often, my guidance is my mother. She's the one that gives me her opinion and helps me out on what I should do.

P.s. Is there homework due Monday?

Hi C-Rod! lol

Long time, right?

It took me about 5 minutes to figure out the song I wanted to put. It's called One Sweet Love by (you should already know) Sara Bareilles.

There are parts that she means that you would do anything for someone you love and how all you can think of is that one person. I think we can all relate to that part.

She's also wondering if she's "already tasted her piece of one sweet love".

Here are the lyrics:

Just about the time the shadows call
I undress my mind and dare you to follow
Paint a portrait of my mystery
Only close my eyes and you are here with me
A nameless face to think I see
To sit and watch the waves with me till they're gone
A heart I'd swear I'd recognize is made out of
My own devices....
Could I be wrong?

The time that I've taken
I pray is not wasted
Have I already tasted my piece of one sweet love?

Sleepless nights you creep inside of me
Paint your shadows on the breath that we share
You take more than just my sanity
You take my reason not to care.
No ordinary wings I'll need
The sky itself will carry me back to you
The things I dream that I can do I'll open up
The moon for you
Just come down soon

The time that I've taken
I pray is not wasted
Have I already tasted my piece of one sweet love?
Ready and waiting for a heart worth the breaking
But I'd settle for an honest mistake in the name of
One sweet love.

Savor the sorrow to soften the pain sip on
The southern rain
As I do, I don't look don't touch don't do anything
But hope that there is a you.

The earth that is the space between,
I'd banish it from under me...to get to you.
Your unexpected love provides my solitary's
Suicide...oh I wish I knew

The time that I've taken
I pray is not wasted
Have I already tasted my piece of one sweet love?
Ready and waiting for a heart worth the breaking
But I'd settle for an honest mistake in the name of
One sweet love.

The song that is really special to me is "Someone is watching over me" by Hillary Duff. It's special because it talks about how someone that you really love dies and then from heaven above is watching over you. Just like my little brother died and well he was and still is really special to me so every time I hear it makes me think of him.

Everyone need guidance once in a while, I mean nobody knows everything, and everyone has times in which they need help to find their way through. When I’m trying something new, I usually find myself looking at what other people are doing to try to find a guide in how to master the new skill. When I’m lost I look for signs or billboards that seem familiar to help me find my way. For more personal things, I usually ask my mother for guidance, I ask her to lead me through the tough times, and help me find my way back. I ask for her help and her wisdom since she has already lived through what I’m going through.

I do look for guidance when I’m lost. I usually ask whoever is close by for help and if they’re no help, I use something called a cell phone to call my friends or my parents. When I’m literally lost somewhere I call my father because he is quite oriented and he always finds his way around. When I need help with my homework I use the internet and problem solved, but when I have no idea what I am doing in class I ask whoever is next to me or juts ask the teacher. Personal problems I keep to myself but if its something I can’t figure out, I ask Virginia (my bestie) for advise or any of my other close friends

Whether in a time of crisis or at a time of confusion, we all had some sort of guidance in our lives. I, for one, look for signs all around me. For example when I'm lost, I usually ask the people next to me for help. I also ask my grandparents for advice because they are much more experienced than me. While other times, I let fate decide by flipping a coin. But hey that's just me.

I seek guidence on a daily basis, from my mother though, no one else. When I feel thst I need advice on anything, I seek my mother. When I'm confused, and I need to be put in the right path, I talk to my mother (SHE HAS PROBABLY GONE THROUGH IT). But then sometimes i rely on fate, and faith as well. I trust that God will laways lead me down the right path, and that we really only look for guidence from other people, when we deeply worry.

The song that makes me think about all of lifes irones is "Bye Bye." It talks about losing someone so preciose to you, dying isn't the worst thing in life, but losing someone you love the most is definetly an irone of life. If I ever lost my mother, my best friend, I wouldn't be able to live. She is my air, my water, my savior the Lord sent us to be together. If she leaves, will she see her grand children, or see me graduate, look at the possible years that I shall pass through missery. Here is the song :

"Bye Bye"

This is for my peoples who just lost somebody
Your best friend, your baby, your man, or your lady
Put your hand way up high
We will never say bye (no, no, no)
Mamas, daddies, sisters, brothers, friends and cousins
This is for my peoples who lost their grandmothers
Lift your head to the sky 'cause we will never say bye

As a child there were them times
I didn't get it but you kept me in line
I didn't know why you didn't show up sometimes
On Sunday mornings, and I missed you
But I'm glad we talked through
All them grown folk things
Separation brings
You never let me know it
You never let it show because
You loved me and obviously
There's so much more left to say
If you were with me today face to face

[Chorus:]
I never knew I could hurt like this
And everyday life goes on like
"I wish I could talk to you for awhile"
Miss you but I try not to cry
As time goes by
And it's true that you've reached a better place
Still I'd give the world to see your face
And I'm right here next to you
But it's like you're gone too soon
Now the hardest thing to do is say bye bye

(Bye Bye [3x])
Bye bye

And you never got the chance to see how good I've done
And you never got to see me back at number one
I wish that you were here to celebrate together
I wish that we could spend the holidays together

I remember when you used to tuck me in at night
With the Teddy Bear you gave to me that I held so tight
I thought you were so strong
You'd make it through whatever
It's so hard to accept the fact you're gone forever

[Chorus]

(bye bye bye bye bye bye [3x])
Bye bye

This is for my peoples who just lost somebody
Your best friend, your baby, your man, or your lady
Put your hand way up high
We will never say bye (no, no, no)
Mamas, daddies, sisters, brothers, friends and cousins
This is for my peoples who lost their grandmothers
Lift your head to the sky 'cause we will never say bye

[Chorus]

Yes I do look for guidence when I need help in something that I don't know about. For example, when I had the choice of getting surgery or not I asked my mom for advices in to do it or not.Even though am not old enough to make my own choices even more when it has to do with my life my mom left it to me. She said "It's your choice if you have it or not." I trust god hat he will help pick the right choice and that nothing will go wrong.

this song reminds me alot about the book and you :)))

Ooh…. Oooooohhh.
landlords Knocking at my door cussing me out
got laid off my job the night before
can’t figure how
I’m gonna fix tomorrow away
If today’s still a mess
Can u tell me what’s the point man,
It all seems meaningless
I wish that I could step away and breathe
This world’s trying to swallow me
Clear away the clouds inside my head

Chorus:
Someone just tell me
That it’s ok now
What are you worried about

Got my dreams, got my life, got my love
Got my friends got the sunshine above
Why am I making this hard on myself
When there’s so many beautiful reasons I have to be happy

People lie, people hide, people cry, people fight

And they don’t know why
If fear is all that we should fear
Then what are we so afraid of
Cause fear is only in our heads

Someone please say…
(chorus)

any day ill go bad thinking bad
everyone is against me and the world wants to fight me
preparing to battle an enemy unseen
during my stressing I’m blinded to the lesson
that could be a blessing if Id be confessing that the enemy
I’m trying to beatis hiding inside of me

But it’s ok now…what are you worrying about……(chorus)

Repeat 2x : Keep your grind on girl…it’s your love, it’s your world…

Hi Mrs. C-Rod I wasn't sure if I could still post this but here it goes.

I picked a song called Vienna and it is by Billy Joel. The lyrics are:

Slow down you crazy child, your so ambitious for a juvinenile, but then if your so smart, tell me why are you still so afraid?

Wheres the fire what's the hurry about, you better cool it off before you burn it out, you got so much to do in only os many hours in a day.

But you know that when the truth is told that you can get what you want or you can just get old, your gonna kick off before you even get half way through, when will you realize Vienna waits for you.

Slow down your doing fine you cant be everything you wanna be before your time although its so romantic in the borderline tonight, tonight, too bad but its the life you lead, your so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need though you can see when your wrong you know you cnat always see when your right, your right.

You got your passion, you got your pride, but dont you know that only fools are satisfied? Dream on but dont inagine it will all come true, when will you realize Vienna waits for you?

Slow down you crazy child and take the phone off the hook and disapear for a while, its alright you can afford to lose a day or two, when will you realize Vienna waits for you?

You know that when the truth is told that you can get what you want or you can just get old your gona kick off before you even get half way through, why dont you realize Vienna waits for you, when will you realize Vienna waits for you?

The song does a very good job explaining me and how I am, this song is that song that I listen to when I am down and it gives me strenght to keep going. It reminds me to think before I speak and not rush into things, which I am always doing both of these things.

Hey c-rod wats up the book is awesome.I know its late but I still wanted post the song that you heard its called Tonight by group1crew. The song talks about how sometimes things happen in our lives that we cant control and god is always there to coomfort and protect you.

You had it all planned out, you and him together in a big white house
Happy ever afters all you dreamed about nothing could be better cuz, you knew that you could
Make it through any weather but, things changed when he moved away, you were all by yourself
Through the lonely days, all you could do was pray, then the phone call came (I think we're
Heading separate ways) your heart stopped, and you dropped to your knees God why, is all this
Happening to me I, understand everything's not perfect but you're there through the worst of
It, and Lord I hear you say

[Chorus]
Tonight let every tear you cry and everything wrong inside, bring you to me so I can make it right, cause even in the hardest times you only need to realize, what you mean to me so let me be your lullaby

I knew a boy from the Southside, him and his friend were inseparable, hung out all day watched
Football games wherever one went the other would go, but one night he got a phone call,
Something happened that brought tears to his face. There was an accident we tried to save your
Friend but it was too late
Why is all this happening, I just lost my only friend, I need to know I'm not alone, I can
Hear you gently whisper

Chorus

They say if life gives you lemons make lemonade, bitter sweet is the tune it likes to play
Were all instruments played on a different day like a symphony like a symphony, we're born
Married into life and there's no divorce, sometimes we're powerless to change the course and
The innocent pay the cost

Her hair looked like flaming hot cheetos, her skin full of chocolate chips, that blended together to create a beautiful design. She was like vanilla ice cream just much much colder.

E.C. question for chapter four:

On Mrs. Rodriguez's good days she can be the sweetest person on earth. She as sweet as the bucket of candy on halloween day. But on her grumpy days she can be mean like a mexican taco dip in a gallon of volcano hot sauce.

My mother is as a strawberry, at times depending the time of year, she can be deliciously sweet, but when she is not in her season, she can be sour and bitter. If you have ever tasted a sour strawberry, you know you must have an acquired taste. I love strawberries sour or sweet, all year around their good enough to eat.

I'm going to be absent today, I feel bad in a way that you wouldn't understand. I will be on top of my work as usual have a great weekend. Also the book is better than I expected, full of such amazing words. You are my favorite, BYE.

Sorry I didn't do my mom's phisical apperance. She acts as a strawberry but doesn't look like one. Her hair is brown as the top of the strawberry, its leaves I mean when their passed ripe. Her teeth are as milk, white drops of it perfectly allined. Her legs are like carrots, skiny tip for her ankles, and her thies big as the top compared to the bottom. She is healthy as you can see, made of fruits and vegtables all for me.

Wackii is like a rancid chef's salad. He is, above all, a ham and a turkey! Furthermore, Wackii is malodorous like that of rotten boiled eggs. I am serious here; no yoke! haha! Oh, and when he is at the plate, you would think he is hitting with damp, wilted lettuce. Shall I go on????

I am volcano hot sauce? Well, if that's the case, watch out!!!!

I love you and am just kidding. YOU KNOW I ADORE YOU! However, you better write a new one that is a little more reflective of me. You were a little off. haha!

Johana is sweet and strong like sugarcane, yet hot like jalapeƱos(wink ). Her hair is as orange as carrots and more twisted than curly fries. Her teeth are as white as milk with eyes brown like cinnamon sticks. She is like lettuce always fresh and healthy, light and satisfying.

Extra Credit if it still counts....

Her hair is so dark it seems like dark chocolate hanging down her back, at the same time her hair gives out a sweet scent of strawberry which would leave you hungry for some, she is as sweet as a delicious red apple but as sour as a lemon, which I recommended never to get on her evil side.

P.s. I don't know if it sounds ok...

Make sure it is indicative of the time. WHACK, I don't think, was a familiar term of the period. Righteous, groovy, etc. were. Rethink it. I am sorry, I thought I had posted this earlier.
