Outlines

Would an architect construct a building without developing a blueprint? Why should research paper writing be any different? An outline functions as a blueprint by providing definition to your research paper. It is a glimpse of your final copy. An outline reveals weakness in how your thoughts have been organized, lack of a presentation style, deviance from the subject at hand that needs to be corrected before you start writing.

An outline is basically your writing plan. There are different kinds of outlines, but the sentence outline is most often used when organizing a long essay or research paper. Because it requires sentences to express each idea or detail, this outline forces you to think each point through carefully before including it in your paper.

The above information was taken from:
http://essaywritingblog.com/handbook-for-essay-writers/apa-research-paper-outline/83

Below are some samples. You can do either, though the sentence format is more APAish, while the topic format is more MLAish.

Here are some other sites you can use to get some ideas:

Remember to use one inch margins for your outline, and it must be in 12 pt Times New Roman. You must also include your revised thesis statement. We will discuss this in class.

Is it ok if...like... we forgot how to do an outline?

Mabit & Yannel - Give it time to stream. See what happens. It was working for me. Do you have Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat? If it does not work, I will have copies, but please keep trying.

Kaitlynn - If you forgot to do an outline, check under this post. If that does not help, do a little investigating on the Web.

Mrs.
i need help on different quotes and something i could research for my topic. My topic was "There is a fullness of time for things. You have to know when to prod and when to be quiet. When to let things take their course." I know I could connect it to When May died and how August dealt with it but I don't know what to research on. HELP!!!

You can reselect a topic, or you can get creative about how to make it apply. Yours is one that you have to do little research...you just have to know the novel well. Did you think about how August knew when to prod Lily and when to leave her alone. What about Lily and T-Ray, what about Rosaleen and the men? Some characters lived by that quote, while others did not. Think about it...YOU WILL GET IT :o)

The notes page you can arrange any way that you choose. I did it the way I did because it works for me. You do what works for you.

Thanks, Mabyt. I thought it made it easy, too. It will even make your reference page easier to do, as well as your rough draft.

Mrs. I need an example like one of yours on the blog for the outline. I know I am over thinking it but it is just very frustrating and confusing. Can you help! I got the notes page done i just need the outline.

Click on one of the samples. The Roman numerals are your main points, while the alphabets are the quotes and info to support that point. You need to try and figure this out. I have explained it twice and provided some great samples. I know that you can do it. I believe in you :o)

Diana - If you've done your note page, your outline is basically done. Plug in the info from your note page into the right order. That's all...
